COMPOSITE MATERIAL PRODUCT DESCRIPTIONS

Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete (GFRC)

PCI certified GFRC is a structural concrete material fabricated with an integral metal framing system. The product is typically designed and engineered by the manufacturer. GFRC is perceived as a direct substitute for pre-cast or stone. Reasons for choosing GFRC includes lightweight (12–15#/SF), shapes (cornices, columns) or when matching color is important. Our supplier is Architectural Cladding. (See Spec #1)

Glass Fiber Reinforced Cement (GRC)

This is a thin shelled product (3/16”) that does not have structural characteristics. GRC is face fastened and field painted. The material is ideal for column enclosures and some cornice applications. Joints can be finished using only a manufacturer supplied and warranted joint compound. The product is chosen because it provides economy and painted appearances like wood. Our manufacturer is Plaster Concepts. (See Spec #2)

GRC Integral Color

Ecostone is a product that is similar to regular GRC, but it can be integrally colored to match stone and pre-cast finishes. Our supplier is DEC. (See Spec #3)

Glass Fiber Reinforced Gypsum (GRG)

GRG is an interior version of the GRC. It is typically 3/16” thick. GRG has great point load resistance. The joints are finished using sheetrock compound materials and tools. The finished result is a painted plaster appearance. GRG is ideal for interior column covers, domes, barrel vaults, light coves and cornices. Our manufacturer is Plaster Concepts. (See Spec #4)

Fiber Reinforced Polyester (FRP) or Architectural Fiberglass

FRP for construction was first developed by Disney to build Epcot. They were seeking a light weight material (½ LB/SF) that could be built in every imaginable shape and be pre-finished. FRP can be used to replicate finishes including stone, metal and wood. The material is made with permanent color. Therefore, FRP provides a maintenance free surface that is lightweight and durable. Our suppliers are Spaulding Craft and DEC.

(See Spec #5 Field Painted FRP) (See Spec #6 Gelcoat FRP)
(See Spec #7 Aggregate FRP) (See Spec #8 Automotive Finish FRP)

Cellular PVC (CPVC)

CPVC is a non-degrading substitute for wood. The material can be machined into shapes like cornices and federal style columns. The product requires field painting. It behaves like wood except for the material is maintenance free. Our supplier is Wood Tectonics. (See Spec #9)

High Density Eurethane (HDE)

Commonly referred to brand names like Fypon, Chemcrest and Focal Point, HDE is used as a wood substitute. There are many profiles available including balusters, moldings, door and window surrounds as well as gable vents. HDE is used in lieu of wood because it does not degrade and is economical. (See Spec #10)
